Glen Head Homes for Sale

Glen Head is part of the town of Oyster Bay in Nassau County, is situated about 25 miles from Manhattan. It’s a relatively small community, with a population of about 4,700, and falls roughly between the larger, denser and better-known North Shore areas of Roslyn and Glen Cove.

The hamlet has a Long Island Rail Road station, and trains travel to Penn Station in about an hour.

Although there is no Long Island Sound waterfront within the hamlet’s borders, residents can walk or ride bikes to nearby beaches. “It’s a highly green area, and as soon as the leaves come out, you get natural privacy. It's called the Monterey of the East Coast, but without the beach, because it’s one of the best places to live.”

Glen Head is part of the well-regarded North Shore school district, which shares schools with the neighboring small communities of Glenwood Landing and Sea Cliff.

Real estate in the area consists mostly of single-family houses, with some condominium communities and a small number of co-ops.

Prices range from about $400,000 for a small starter house to as much as $2 million for large houses on large lots in the sought-after areas of North Shore Acres or near High Farms Road.

Residents have access to nearby town beaches and their amenities, including the Harry Tappen Pool, Beach and Marina, in Glenwood Landing.

“You can actually walk there right down Glenwood Road…you can sit there and have a cocktail and watch the sunset. It’s a little jewel and it’s kind of tucked away on the North Shore.”

Parks: Local parks include the Francis M. Gaynor Park, with playground and picnic area. Residents have access to Oyster Bay town parks and beaches, including the Harry Tappen Beach, with pool and harbor swimming, playground, boat racks and picnic areas.

Schools: Glen Head is part of the North Shore School District, with about 2,700 students in elementary schools in Glen Head, Glenwood Landing and Sea Cliff and shared middle and high schools.

According to state data, 93% of students who entered high school in North Shore in 2010 met or exceeded state standards for proficiency in English Language Arts, compared with 82% statewide; and 96% did so in math, compared with 84% statewide.
