Incorporated in 1931, Muttontown is a Village within the Town of Oyster Bay. One of the many exclusive areas on the Gold Coast North Shore, Muttontown’s roots were actually steeped in sheep pasturage, hence the origins of the name. Much larger than its contemporary border communities, Muttontown occupies over 6 square miles or 4,500+ acres of pristine lands. This residential community is surrounded to the West by The Village of Brookville, to the East by the Village of Oyster Bay Cove, to the North by East Norwich and the Village of Upper Brookville.
Muttontown is a tranquil community once home to the grand estates built by nobility and titans of industry. It was a social magnet for the elite-of-the-elite in its heyday. Today, most of these magnificent properties have either fallen into disrepair or were carved into smaller private estates, but the grandeur and majesty remains evident with an eclectic mix of architectural styles perched on lands that were once part of such famed expansive estates as Knollwood, Pen-Mor and Easton. Horse farms are an integral part of the Muttontown facade as the equestrian lovers take full advantage of the multitude of horse trails, pristine lands and natural beauty of the area. With a private police force, minutes from shopping and easy access to main roadways, the commute into Manhattan is a short 25 minutes via LIRR.
